The National Bank of Kazakhstan issues and sells special coins for collectors and investors. The coins come out in series dedicated to the country’s culture and history, its nature, and notable events and people.
The bank needed a convenient app for working with the coin catalog and a clear way to show a coin to someone who has never held it.
Task
Build a mobile app for two audiences at once. For those just getting to know the coins, present them in a simple and engaging way. For collectors and professionals, provide a working tool: a catalog with detailed specifications, a filter, purchasing and a personal collection.
Inside the app
All app screens and states are designed for both platforms, iOS and Android.
- Home. New releases of the year, coin search and stories.
- Catalog. Collectible, circulation and investment coins, organized by theme and series.
- Coin card. Obverse and reverse, issue date, face value, metal, weight, diameter, minting quality and mintage. Alongside it, the story of the coin.
- Filter. By metal, diameter, year of issue, face value, gilding and gemstone inlays.
- Personal collection and favorites. Collectors mark the coins they already own and see how many are left to complete a series.
- Purchase. Coins can be bought directly in the app.
- Notifications. News about new series and sales.
- Feedback. Answers to frequently asked questions and a short survey the bank uses to improve the app.
Coins in 3D and augmented reality
The core of the app is its 3D coin models. Users can rotate a coin with a finger and examine it from every side.
In augmented reality (AR) mode, the coin appears in front of the user through the phone camera, as if it were lying right there. The mode is launched from the coin screen in the app or via a QR code in a booklet or on a poster.
3D models of several dozen coins were created for the app.
Result
The National Bank of Kazakhstan now has an app that works both as a showcase and as a collector’s tool. Newcomers can view a coin in AR and learn its story. Collectors can find the coin they need with the filter, complete a series and buy the missing pieces.
We thank the National Bank team for their help on the project.
